Description

Alice Austen 1896 Correspondence and Social Records

Overview

This digitized collection preserves the personal and social documents of Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) for the calendar year 1896. It consists of high‑resolution JPEG scans of handwritten letters, envelopes, Victorian‑era calling cards, and negative‑sleeve artifacts, accompanied by typed TXT transcriptions. All items are in the public domain and hosted by the Alice Austen House Museum in Staten Island, New York.

Background

By 1896 Austen had established a thriving photography studio in New York City and was actively marketing images from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Her correspondence network spanned the northeastern United States and Canada, reflecting her dual roles as a professional photographer and a social connector among upper‑middle‑class families. The collection offers a snapshot of her daily life, business dealings, and leisure activities during the late Victorian era.

Contents

  • Personal letters (≈ 15 items) exchanged with close friends and relatives, including Julia T. Martin (Albany), Violet M.E. Ward (Staten Island), Trude Eccleston (Mohonk Lake), and Isabella King (photography buyer). Topics cover travel itineraries, family news, the purchase of a Steinway piano, and the sale of photographs.
  • Envelopes and postal markings showing addresses in Staten Island, Kingston (Ontario), New York City, and Halifax (Nova Scotia).
  • Calling cards that illustrate Austen’s social circle and Victorian etiquette.
  • Negative sleeves and other photography‑related artifacts that hint at her studio practice.
  • Transcriptions of all handwritten letters, enabling text search and analysis.

Scope

The collection is confined to the year 1896 and includes only incoming correspondence and related social documents; replies, photographs, and business records are excluded. Geographic references span the United States (Staten Island, Albany, Chicago, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Portland, Fishkill‑on‑Hudson) and Canada (Kingston, Halifax). The archive provides a comprehensive view of Austen’s personal network, leisure pursuits, and early professional activities, making it a valuable resource for researchers of Victorian social history, photography commerce, and postal practices.

## Organization Strategy

Organize by correspondent/author first, then by date. Create groups for each major correspondent (Julia Martin, Violet Ward, etc.), with subfolders by year-month when possible. For files without clear authorship, organize by document type (calling cards, business correspondence, etc.).
