Description

Austen Family Papers (MS1) – Alice Austen Correspondence, 1893

Overview

This digitized collection preserves the personal and business correspondence of Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) for the calendar year 1893. The archive is housed at the Alice Austen House Museum in Staten Island and is available online as high‑resolution JPEG scans accompanied by OCR‑derived transcriptions. It includes handwritten letters, envelopes, calling cards, wedding invitations, and photographic accessories such as negative sleeves, all addressed to or from Austen.

Background

Alice Austen was a pioneering American photographer whose studio served an upper‑middle‑class clientele in New York and the surrounding region. In 1893 she attended the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, sold photographs from the fair, and maintained an extensive social network that spanned Staten Island, Albany, New Jersey, and the broader metropolitan area. The museum’s 2010 digitization project captured these documents, offering insight into the daily life, commercial practices, and social etiquette of a woman at the intersection of art, commerce, and high‑society.

Contents

  • Personal letters from close friends (Julia T. Martin, Violet M.E. Ward, Julie Bredt), relatives (Annie, Mema), and acquaintances (Henry Gilman, Bessie Strong). Topics include skating parties, whist gatherings, church services, travel itineraries (Chicago, Lake George, Adirondacks), and the sale of photographs from the exposition.
  • Business correspondence with clients such as Isabella King and other buyers, discussing photographic plates, sales, and commissions.
  • Envelopes and calling cards that illustrate Victorian postal practices and social networking.
  • Wedding invitations and formal notices, including a marriage invitation to the wedding of Josephine Worth Sprague and Lt. Alexander Lucien Dade.
  • Negative sleeves and related documentation that provide a glimpse into Austen’s studio operations.
Each item is accompanied by a typed transcription (TXT) for research convenience.

Scope

The collection covers only the year 1893 and contains materials directly related to Austen’s correspondence and business. It excludes her photographic prints, studio equipment, and later correspondence. The geographic focus spans Staten Island, Chicago, Lake George, and other New York State locales, reflecting Austen’s social and professional milieu during a pivotal year in her career. The archive is a valuable resource for scholars of Victorian society, early photography, and New York history.
