Description

Julia F. Bredt Correspondence to Alice Austen (March 1890)

Overview

This collection comprises three scanned images of handwritten letters written by Julia F. Bredt to Elizabeth Alice Austen in March 1890. The letters were produced in Clifton, Staten Island, and are part of the Austen Family Papers (MS1) housed at the Alice Austen House Museum. Digitized in JPEG format with accompanying OCR text, the items provide a snapshot of Victorian‑era social life and personal relationships.

Background

Julia F. Bredt was a close friend of Alice Austen, the pioneering Staten Island photographer whose papers span 1883‑1898. The correspondence reflects the social milieu of the upper‑middle class in late‑19th‑century America and offers insight into the personal and family matters that occupied Austen’s circle. The collection was assembled by the museum and is a subset of the broader digitized Austen Family Papers.

Contents

The three letters—dated March 2001, March 2002, and March 2003 (all March 1890)—are scanned as JPEG images and include OCR‑derived transcriptions. They discuss personal relationships, family events, and social engagements. Notable mentions include Lord Wigram, Mr. Affleck, Sophie White, Elphistone, Call, and Elphistone’s brother. The letters also reference Rose Bank P.C. in Clifton and allude to an upcoming trip to Europe.

Scope

The collection covers a single month—March 1890—within Clifton, Staten Island, and contains only the three letters from Julia Bredt to Alice Austen. It does not include other materials such as calling cards or negative sleeves. The items are a valuable primary source for scholars researching Victorian social networks, the life of Alice Austen, and the cultural context of Staten Island in the late 19th century.

For these two weeks it goes perfectly dreadful. You'll find her, and she has brought you a package from Mrs. Mother every day. It seems like a big load taken. If you go to see Lord Wigram to-day and see appropriate note you'll have some very good news really. She is going to Europe in April & behind all the work I have been so nice doing my very own business. I am able after three days from getting the affair settled and Elphistone, Call and Elphistone's brother asked me please to stay there so I did it. Frankly do not feel like it. From Mr. Affleck at Warrnambool I say I must not say anything more with you. Frankly, yes. Today I had a letter from Sophie White. She tells
