Description

Austen Family Calling Cards Collection

Overview

The Austen Family Calling Cards Collection is a digitized set of three Victorian-era calling cards created in 1890. The cards were produced by members of the Austen family of Rosebank, Staten Island, and are now preserved by the Alice Austen House Museum. Each card is presented as a high‑resolution JPEG image, accompanied by machine‑readable OCR text that captures the printed names and addresses.

Background

Calling cards were a staple of Victorian social etiquette, used to announce visits, invitations, and the presence of guests at social events. The Austen family, prominent in the Rosebank community, produced these cards as part of their social correspondence. The collection reflects the family’s engagement with the customs of the late 19th‑century upper‑middle class in New York City. The Alice Austen House, the former residence of photographer Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952), serves as the institutional repository, offering a contextual link between the family’s social life and the broader cultural milieu of Staten Island.

Contents

The collection contains three distinct cards:
  • Doris Austin – A single‑person card bearing the name “Doris Austin” and the place “Rosebank.”
  • Mr. John Austen & Family – A family card that lists “Mr. John Austen & Family, Rosebank” and includes the initials “J.S.”, likely indicating a family member or the card’s maker.
  • Mrs & Miss Austin – A card addressing “Mrs & Miss Austin,” suggesting a joint card for a mother and daughter or two sisters.
  • Each card is captured in a JPEG file ranging from 491 kB to 568 kB, with accompanying OCR text that confirms the printed content. The images provide visual evidence of the card’s design, typography, and any decorative elements typical of the period.

    Scope

The collection is narrowly focused on a single year—1890—and a specific geographic area: Rosebank, Staten Island, United States. It documents only three calling cards, offering a snapshot of the Austen family’s social interactions and domestic identity during that year. The collection does not include related correspondence, photographs, or other ephemera, but it serves as a valuable resource for understanding Victorian social practices and family networks in late‑19th‑century New York.
