Description

Correspondence of G.B. Strong to Alice Austen (1892)

Overview

This collection comprises a series of handwritten letters written by G.B. Strong to Elizabeth Alice Austen in 1892, together with scanned reproductions of the originals and ancillary photographs. The material is organized by date, with two main clusters: a set of letters dated November 17–18, 1892, and a second set dated December 28–29, 1892. Each cluster is represented by multiple high‑resolution JPEG scans (five for the November letter, three for the December letter), plus a scanned photograph of Alice Austen that appears in the November correspondence.

Background

Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a pioneering American photographer based in Staten Island, New York. Her papers at the Alice Austen House Museum include personal correspondence that illuminates her social network and professional activities. G.B. Strong, a friend and correspondent from New Brunswick, New Jersey, maintained a close friendship with Austen, exchanging letters that discuss both personal matters and contemporary events. The letters were written in the late Victorian era, reflecting the social customs and political climate of the time.

Contents

  • Letters (Nov 17–18, 1892): Five scanned images of a single letter, detailing Strong’s receipt of a photograph of Austen, political commentary on the Democrats and Republicans, and a list of gifts received from family and friends.
  • Letters (Dec 28–29, 1892): Three scanned images of a second letter, in which Strong thanks Austen for a copy of Thackeray’s poems, recounts holiday celebrations, and lists additional presents.
  • Photograph of Alice Austen (1892): A scanned image of a portrait sent by Strong, included in the November correspondence.
  • References to ancillary items: The letters mention photographs sold, gifts such as silver card cases and a Steinway piano, and social events like the “Boys Club” and a house‑warming reception.

Scope

The collection covers the year 1892, focusing on the period from mid‑November to late‑December. It is geographically situated in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York. The material is limited to personal correspondence and related photographic reproductions; it does not include the full set of Austen’s photographic negatives or other unrelated documents. The collection offers insight into Austen’s social circle, the cultural milieu of late‑19th‑century New York, and the everyday concerns of a Victorian‑era woman engaged in the early professional photography market.

as a birthday remembrance. I did not know you were aware of the date of my birth, and was greatly surprised when your package came. The wretched Democrats are having a parade down town, and the drums are beating furiously, all of which is calculated to rile an ardent Republican like myself—so if my letter is incoherent it is attributable to the Democrats. They are responsible for a great New Brunswick - Nov. 17th /92 My dear Alice— I have just had your photograph in my hands and we have all been admiring it. It is quite the best picture I have seen of you and I am delighted to have it. The frame too is an excellent setting and extremely pretty. So thank you for the picture, frame and the thought of me which sent it all.

deal of "cussedness" in this world anyway. I have been almost heart-broken over the election; now I am trying to smile and smile and make believe I don't care. But O! I do. Perhaps you may be interested to know what my presents were. From Mother I had some evening gloves, from Father some money which I invested in music. Theodore gave me an album for mounting photographs; Miss Van Rensselaer a pretty little packet from Nassau. Helen's present was a bon-bon dish, Etta's an exquisite copy of "Hyperion," my sister-in-law's such a pretty Japanese table-cover, pale blue broked in gold, and from Miss Dayton a Columbian Exhibition souvenir spoon. I think I was quite a lucky girl. Mrs. Austin and Hellie BeFore called here Saturday afternoon. It was the day after the D.U. reception and I was something of a wreck so was lying down. When I went down to

to be a wall-flower, but so far have been mighty intimate. There is a shocking dearth of men this season; plenty of youngsters but I do not know them well. Helen and I spent last evening at the "Boys' Club" and how the little rascals did act! There were nearly a hundred present and they kept things lively. Mr. Acket spent most of the evening ejecting the unruly ones. Wonder if you have met Acket? It seems like such a nice fellow, and The parlor there sat your Aunt and Hetty, Carrie and Annie Woodbridge and Thess Anable! It was really like a reception. The D.U. house warming was by far the swelllest thing we've had here in a while. It was charmed with the house; it is so well planned. The music was fine ditto the supper, and I had the best kind of a time. I am always looking forward to the time when I shall begin

knows how to manage those boys so well. I had to furnish music for them, and should have heard their selections shouted "America" till I thought their throats and my ears would give out. I shall have to practise up all the chestnuts, for I have promised to play for them every Wednesday if they behave well. Perhaps you have been expecting me down at the Island, but I hardly think it. At any rate much as I should like it I cannot leave home just now, and probably not till after the holidays—first comes Thanksgiving then a fair on the 30th and Dec. 1st. Next comes the Musical Association Concert on the 15th and after that Christmas. Eva writes that she hopes to be "out of the woods" by the end of this week. Trust she may and as comfortably as possible. Effa was to go to Dr. G. for the winter today. Mother joins me in love. Again with thanks for the photos. Always yours, G.B.S.

Before I go any farther let me thank you for the dainty edition of Thackeray's poems. It is a little gem, and as I am quite unfamiliar with his poetry, am delighted to have it. Was ashamed of my small remembrance; intended to send something different, but did not have time to finish it. Indeed three of my presents are yet to be finished. We really celebrated New Brunswick Dec. 28th /92 My dear Alice:— Am going to begin a letter to you, but it will probably have to be finished to-morrow, for it is now almost supper time and I must be off to the "Boys Club" immediately after. I can imagine what pleasant memories the mention of that Club will revive.

Fifth Sunday and Monday. Had our presents for Fifth day, and company on Fifth day—Aleen and Mr. Dickey came home from church and dined with us, and the latter stayed all the afternoon.
