Description

Alice Austen – Julie Bredt Correspondence Collection (1892)

Overview

This collection comprises four scanned copies of handwritten letters exchanged between Elizabeth Alice Austen, a pioneering Staten‑Island photographer, and her close friend Julie Bredt in 1892. The items are presented as JPEG images with accompanying OCR‑extracted text, and a JSON metadata file that records the provenance, dates, and subject tags. The collection is part of the Austen Family Papers housed at the Alice Austen House Museum.

Background

Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a leading American photographer of the late nineteenth century, known for her portraiture and landscape work. In the early 1890s she maintained an active social circle that included friends such as Julia T. Martin and Violet M.E. Ward. The correspondence with Julie Bredt reflects Austen’s dual interests in social life and her burgeoning photography business, including sales of images from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The letters were written in English and were likely circulated among Austen’s network of friends and patrons.

Contents

  • Four JPEG scans of letters dated March 19, 1892 and other unspecified dates in 1892.
  • OCR text extracted from each scan, revealing discussions of social events (e.g., a ball, minstrel performances), photography sales, and personal matters such as a Steinway piano purchase.
  • Metadata JSON detailing creators, dates, subjects (correspondence, social life, photography, Victorian era, friendship, family relationships, music), and locations (Staten Island, Delaware, Albany).
  • The letters are addressed to Julie Bredt and reference other contemporaries, illustrating the social milieu of upper‑middle‑class Staten‑Island society.

Scope

The collection covers a narrow temporal window—primarily March 1892—within the broader Austen correspondence. It is geographically focused on Staten Island, with ancillary references to Delaware and Albany. The material is limited to the four letters and their metadata; it does not include other correspondence, photographs, or business records from Austen’s practice. This collection offers a focused glimpse into Austen’s personal relationships and social engagements during a formative period of her career.

Can not stand it alone—with you to back him up, he was elegant for a week but now—don't you ever mention a thing to him, for he will tell! Now be careful, for it would be awful if it got out. Now mind you don't, if you do I'll tell you no more. What ever you do don't let him think I have talked to you it made me mad for him to think I had talked. Far will Julia— Sunday aft.
