GILMAN, 1441 Broadway, Cor. 41st St. NEW YORK, July 18th, 1892 My dear Miss Austen— In greatest haste I write to say that your note has just come in and I am glad on your account you are going away as the change will no doubt be beneficial. I hope you will have a beautiful time. On my own account I am very sorry you are going because I have counted a good deal on seeing you again this week but I shall have to be patient in this as in other matters. I am awfully glad you really enjoyed the trip the other evening. It was a very fine great pleasure for me and I hope we may repeat it somehow when you come back. I had no difficulty at all in making
my train the other night. I had to wait over five minutes at the Station, so I might have seen you at the door as well as not. It was beautifully cool going up on the boat & bright moonlight and there is some fun besides in watching the "Spoons." I wonder if you are joking about wanting my picture. I could have it taken this week if I were sure you really want it. I thought of you but am undecided. Will you promise me a better one of you than I have if I have mine taken? I would rather go to the dentist than the photographer any day. Won't you let me know your address at Watkins soon as you can? Please for myself as well as always. Yours as always, H.K.G.
Miss E. Alice Austin c/o Rev. Dr. Eccleston Watkins Glen — New York — at the "Favitarium"
Saturday Dear Miss Austin, I send you this letter at a venture to the care of Rev. Dr. Eccleston at "The Sanitarium" hope it will eventually reach you. I hope to hear how you are improving—the shining hour—it being a good while
I have news of you. I send also by this mail some of the newspapers that have accumulated this week and hope you may find something to laugh at in them. Puck, Judge, Life and the "American" - the latter with pictures of the college news and of the races in our West in three you. Are you coming home? Life here is stupid as usual - I varied the monotony Thursday by going to the Damrosch concert and by good luck struck another Wagner night. Monday I hope to take a day off and visit West Point with my three nephews. Let me hear from you - with best regards to Miss E. Jan. Yours as always, H.H.L.
