@file_1892_6_29_june_10002_copy_jpg -> describes -> @fete_champetreTHE STORM STOPPED THE FETE. The grand fête champêtre and fair given under the auspices of the Staten Island Cricket Club and the Ladies' Club, at their beautiful grounds at Livingston, S. I., were brought to an abrupt and unfortunate stop by the storm of yesterday afternoon. A tree near the tent in which the articles of the fair were being sold was struck by lightning and the fair occupants in their fright to reach a place of safety got drenched to the skin, although it was not over fifty yards to the men's club house, where they got shelter. The beautiful Japanese lanterns, &c., that were to have illuminated the grounds at night were reduced to a pulp. Nothing daunted, however, the plucky ladies have removed all their articles to the club house, and the fête and fair will be continued there to-night, when Staten Island, it is hoped, will turn out en masse to endeavor to make a successful ending to an entertainment so unfortunately interrupted.
