Description

Alice Austen–B. Watrous Correspondence (1893)

Overview

This digital collection preserves the written exchange between photographer Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) and her correspondent B. Watrous, dated October 9, 1893. The collection comprises two scanned letter images, accompanying OCR‑extracted text, and metadata in PINAX format. The documents are housed at the Alice Austen House museum in Staten Island, New York, and are available online via the Arke Institute.

Background

Alice Austen was a pioneering American photographer who operated a studio in Staten Island and was active in the late‑Victorian photographic community. B. Watrous, a friend and fellow photographer, corresponded with Austen about business, social events, and personal matters. The letters were written during the period surrounding the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a major event that influenced the subjects of Austen’s work.

Contents

  • Metadata (PINAX): Records the collection’s title, creators, creation date, subjects (correspondence, photography, Victorian social life, World’s Columbian Exposition, upper‑middle‑class families), and provenance.
  • Letter scans: Two JPEG images of the original handwritten letters (189310‑7‑Oct 2001‑watrous copy.jpg and 189310‑7‑Oct 2002‑watrous copy.jpg).
  • OCR text: Digitized transcriptions of the letters’ content, including references to “Ecclestoins” (likely a church), Mrs. Clowell’s dog, Elder Gould, Mr. C., and Mrs. Henry. The letters discuss the financial strain of photography, the demand for set views, and scenic subjects such as Hague and the Lake.
  • Supporting entities: Place references to Staten Island and Albany, and institutional affiliation with the Alice Austen House museum.

Scope

The collection covers a single date (October 9, 1893) and documents a brief exchange between two individuals involved in the photographic profession. It reflects the social milieu of upper‑middle‑class Staten Island families, the practical concerns of running a photography studio, and the cultural impact of the World’s Columbian Exposition. The material is limited to the two letters and their metadata; no additional photographs, negatives, or ancillary documents are included.
