Description

Daisy Elliott Correspondence to Alice Austen (1893)

Overview

A small digital collection comprising a single handwritten letter from Daisy W. Elliott to Miss E. Alice Austin (later Alice Austen), dated 13 October 1893. The letter is preserved as three JPEG scans, each capturing a portion of the original. The collection is part of the Alice Austen House archival holdings and is catalogued in the institution’s online repository.

Background

Daisy W. Elliott was a contemporary of photographer Alice Austen, both residents of the New York City area—Elliott in Brooklyn and Austen in Staten Island. Their correspondence offers a glimpse into Victorian‑era social life, particularly the leisure pursuits of the upper‑middle class. The Alice Austen House collects such materials to illuminate the personal networks and everyday experiences of its namesake and her circle.

Contents

  • Three scanned images of the letter (JPEG, 493 kB–707 kB).
  • Metadata detailing: date (13 Oct 1893), sender (Daisy W. Elliott), recipient (Miss E. Alice Austin), language (English), and subjects (correspondence, social life, yachting, yacht races, Victorian era, Brooklyn, Staten Island).
  • OCR text extracted from the scans, revealing references to weather, a planned boat outing, a yacht race and its trophy cup, the “Ward’s War” social gathering, and a potential companion named John.
  • Place references to Rosebank (Staten Island) and Clinton Avenue (Brooklyn).

Scope

The collection documents a single, dated letter that reflects the social and recreational milieu of late‑19th‑century Staten Island and Brooklyn. It provides insight into the personal relationships, yachting culture, and local events of the period, but does not include additional letters or broader contextual materials.

493 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn. My dear Miss Austin: I had thought to write tonight that John and I would go down by the ten o'clock boat if it did not rain and was not too windy. Since supper hour, I think it would be foolish to attempt it for it is raining and looks as if it might all night and the roads will be in no condition for a ride. I hope we shall have a good chance soon; I will let you know when we think of going.

How I should like to have seen the race today; it has been run exciting. And how fine it is that the cup stays with us! I wonder if you saw the cartoon in a recent paper of the cup taking root on me; it was quite good, each root a winning yachtsman. I suppose you know the Ward's War around to town; I chance hope to see something of you there this winter and should be happy to see you here at any time if you can get as far off as Brooklyn. Sincerely, Daisy W. Elliott Oct. 13 '93.
