Alice Austen Invitations and Calling Cards Collection

Overview

A digital collection of Victorian‑era invitations and calling cards created in 1893 by James H. Davis and James Hill for the Alice Austen House museum. The collection documents social events in Staten Island, New York, and includes scanned JPEG images of two invitations addressed to photographer Elizabeth Alice Austen.

Background

The collection is part of the Austen Family Papers (MS1) and reflects the social life of Alice Austen and her circle in the 1890s. It was assembled by Davis and Hill to preserve the paper epistles that circulated among the upper‑middle‑class families of Staten Island. The items were produced in English and are housed at the Alice Austen House, a museum dedicated to Austen’s life and work.
