Description

Alice Austen Envelopes and Calling Cards Collection (1893)

Overview

This digitized collection comprises four scanned envelopes and a calling card from 1893, housed in the Austen Family Papers at the Alice Austen House Museum. The items are presented as high‑resolution JPEG images of handwritten correspondence, each accompanied by metadata indicating date, sender, recipient, and place. The collection is part of a larger set of 15 year‑based folders covering 1883‑1898, but this volume focuses exclusively on the social and matrimonial communications of the year 1893.

Background

Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a pioneering photographer and a prominent member of Staten Island’s upper‑middle‑class society. Her personal papers, collected by the museum, document her social network and the Victorian‑era etiquette of the time. The envelopes and calling cards in this collection were likely sent to or from Alice and her acquaintances, reflecting the social rituals of the era. The digitization was undertaken by the Alice Austen House Museum and made available through the PINAX platform.

  • Each item is accompanied by OCR‑derived text and metadata indicating place names (Staten Island, New York City, Cambridge, MA) and dates.

    Scope

The collection documents social and matrimonial correspondence from a single year, 1893, within the geographic confines of Staten Island, New York City, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. It contains no photographic negatives or other media beyond envelopes and calling cards. The collection is a subset of the broader Austen Family Papers (1883‑1898) and is valuable for scholars studying Victorian social networks, women’s correspondence, and the cultural milieu of early 20th‑century Staten Island.
