Description

Adele Brown Correspondence Collection

Overview

The Adele Brown Correspondence Collection is a small, digitized set of two handwritten letters dated 6 February 1893. The letters were written by Adele Brown, a New‑York resident, to Miss Rucker and Mrs Newman. They discuss a forthcoming dance performance in London, the design of a Spanish‑style costume, and the rehearsal schedule for the event. The collection is housed in the Alice Austen House Museum’s digital archive and is available as scanned JPEG images of the original letters.

Background

Adele Brown was associated with Brown Brothers & Co. at 59 Wall Street, New York, and was involved in costume design for dance productions. The correspondence reflects the trans‑Atlantic cultural exchange of the late Victorian era, with New York designers preparing costumes for London performances. The letters were sent from New York to recipients likely based in London, illustrating the logistical coordination required for international theatrical productions in the 1890s.
