Description

Adirondack Trip Letter Collection

Overview

The Adirondack Trip Letter Collection is a digitized assemblage of correspondence and photographic reproductions from August 25 1894. Created by “P.M.”, the collection documents a deer‑hunting excursion in the Adirondack Mountains, with particular reference to the Adirondack Preserve Association and the friend Miss Bessie Strong. The materials are housed in the Alice Austen House Museum’s archival holdings and are presented as two JPEG scans of the original letter, accompanied by OCR‑extracted text.

Background

Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a pioneering American photographer and resident of Staten Island. Her personal papers, including this collection, were curated by the Alice Austen House to preserve the social and cultural milieu of late‑Victorian New York. The letter writer, P.M., was a contemporary acquaintance of Austen, and the correspondence reflects the network of friends and associates that surrounded her. The Adirondack Preserve Association, headquartered in Minerva, Essex County, was a club devoted to conservation and recreation in the Adirondack region; its mention situates the letter within the broader context of early conservationist leisure activities.

Contents

  • Letter, Aug 25 1894 – A handwritten note from P.M. to Alice Austen, describing a deer‑hunting trip conducted under lamp light, the pursuit of a buck, and the capture of a deer. The letter also references Miss Strong and the Adirondack Preserve Association.
  • Photographic reproductions – Two JPEG scans of the original letter (files 18948‑26‑Aug 4002‑kim copy.jpg and 18948‑26‑Aug 4003‑kim copy.jpg) with OCR text extracted for accessibility.
  • Metadata – Digital descriptors include creator, date, subjects (Adirondack Trip, Hunting, Social Life, Correspondence), and provenance information linking the collection to the Alice Austen House.

Scope

The collection covers a single event in late summer 1894, focusing on the Adirondack region of New York State. It illustrates the social practices of upper‑middle‑class New Yorkers, particularly hunting excursions and club membership. The materials are limited to personal correspondence and photographic reproductions; they do not include ancillary items such as calling cards or negative sleeves that appear in other portions of the Austen Papers.

CLUB HOUSE OF Adirondack Preserve Association POST OFFICE, MINERVA, ESSEX CO., N.Y. OFFICE No. 11 PINE STREET, N.Y. Aug 25 1894 Dear Alice: I received your kind bid yesterday, but as there is no way of sending a letter out before tomorrow I did not answer it before. I should have liked to meet Miss Strong very much, if we could have got in a row in the moon light it would have been fine. I went out packing (that is shooting deer by lamp light) saw four, shot one three times but he got away; we followed him by the blood signs for a mile but could not get him, on returning the guide who was ahead of me saw a buck jump and stop to listen he fired and killed it stone dead; So we brought a deer home but I did not shoot it. Just my luck! My visit was very unexpected I just packed up and came last Tuesday. This is the greatest place in the world. I am going out tonight again. I am awfully sorry that I am unable to get down to see you and
