Description

Alice Austen Invitations and Calling Cards Collection (1894)

Overview

This digital collection comprises five Victorian‑era invitations and calling cards received by Alice Austen in 1894. It is part of the Alice Austen Papers (MS1) housed at the Alice Austen House Museum on Staten Island, New York. The items are presented as high‑resolution JPEG scans accompanied by OCR‑derived transcriptions. All documents are in English and illustrate the social network of a prominent Staten Island family during the late 19th century.

Background

Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a pioneering American photographer whose personal papers were preserved by the museum. The 1894 invitation and calling card set was compiled to document Austen’s social life and the broader Victorian social milieu of Staten Island and its connections to New York City and Santa Barbara, California. The creators of the documents—Frederick L. Lehmann, Julia J. Martin, R. J. Evans, and Lalla Baldwins Morton—were close friends or acquaintances of Austen.

Contents

The collection contains five distinct documents:
  • Marriage Invitation (Frederick L. Lehmann) – invites Austen to the wedding of Charlotte Lamson and Edward Dale Appleton at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Fifth Avenue, New York, on 12 Dec 1894.
  • Boarding Card (Julia J. Martin) – details a stay at “The Palms,” 1624 Garden Street, Santa Barbara, California, from 1–7 Dec 1894, including charges and payment.
  • Ticket Refusal (Cricket & Baseball Club) – informs Austen that her application for a ticket to the club’s second assembly was declined.
  • Subscription Invitation (R. J. Evans) – offers Austen a subscription to the last issue of a publication, due 30 Jan 1895.
  • Lecture Ticket (Lalla Baldwins Morton) – invites Austen to a lecture reading at Neville Place, New Brighton, Staten Island, on 7 Feb 1894.
  • Scope

The collection is confined to the calendar year 1894 and includes only the five documents listed above. It reflects upper‑middle‑class social interactions in Staten Island, New York City, and Santa Barbara, California, and does not encompass other correspondence, photographs, or business records from Austen’s broader papers. The digitized images and transcriptions provide researchers with direct access to the original material while preserving its historical context.
