Description

1896 Social Announcements Collection

Overview

The 1896 Social Announcements Collection is a digitized assemblage of printed marriage notices from New York City, preserved by the Alice Austen House Museum. The collection consists of scanned photographs (JPG) of two hand‑crafted announcements issued by families in 1896. Each card is a small, formal print that announces the union of a daughter with a groom, complete with dates, names, and the location of the ceremony. The items were produced by four individuals—Lawrence D. Alexander, Edward A. Whistler Everitt, Erving, and James Gore King—whose families were members of Staten Island’s upper‑middle class.

Background

The Alice Austen House, a historic museum in Staten Island, houses the Austen Family Papers, a broader collection of personal correspondence, photographs, and ephemera from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This subset of social announcements reflects the Victorian‑era custom of publicizing matrimonial alliances in newspapers, society pages, and private printed cards. The creators of the cards were parents announcing their daughters’ marriages, a common practice among New York’s socially prominent families.

Contents

  • Two scanned images (JPG) of printed marriage announcements:
  • 1. Lucy Everitt – daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence D. Alexander, married to Mr. Edward A. Whistler Everitt on November 17, 1896. 2. Sarah Elizabeth – daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Erving, married to Mr. James Gore King on April 22, 1896.
  • Each card lists the parents’ names, the bride’s name, the groom’s name, the wedding date, and the city of the ceremony.
  • The images are accompanied by OCR‑derived text that reproduces the printed wording.

Scope

The collection is limited to marriage announcements issued in 1896 in New York City. It represents the social customs of the era, focusing on familial announcements rather than broader social events. The material is in English, and the provenance is the Alice Austen House. The collection is suitable for genealogical research, studies of Victorian social practices, and examinations of Staten Island’s upper‑middle‑class families during the late nineteenth century.
