Alice Austen Envelopes Collection, 1896

Overview

The Alice Austen Envelopes Collection, 1896 is a digitized set of four postal envelopes addressed to Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) during the year 1896. Each envelope is presented as a high‑resolution JPEG scan, accompanied by OCR‑derived text and metadata that record postal details such as date, sender, destination, postage, and post office. The images were digitized in 2001 and are hosted by the Alice Austen House Museum’s online archive.

Background

Alice Austen was a pioneering photographer and socialite in late‑Victorian Staten Island. The envelopes are part of the larger Austen Family Papers (MS1) housed at the Alice Austen House. They illustrate the everyday correspondence that surrounded Austen’s life and provide insight into the postal practices and social networks of the era. The collection was assembled by the museum’s archivists and made available through the PINAX platform.
