Description

Julia Tabor Martin Correspondence, 1896

Overview

This is a digitized collection of personal letters and postal cards written by Julia Tabor Martin to her friend, photographer Elizabeth Alice Austen, during the year 1896. The materials were scanned from paper originals and include six handwritten letters (May 30, June 1, June 22, July 7, July 15, and a July 7 farewell) and several one‑cent postal cards. The collection is organized by date and contains both the original images and accompanying transcriptions in plain text.

Background

Julia Tabor Martin (born 1866) was a resident of Albany, New York, and a close friend of Austen, who lived in the Rosebank neighborhood of Staten Island. The correspondence reflects the social and familial ties that bound the two women and provides insight into late‑Victorian travel and leisure among the upper‑middle class of the northeastern United States. The letters were preserved by the Alice Austen House Museum and digitized for public access.

Contents

  • Letters (6) – Written in a conversational style, the letters discuss travel plans to Chatham, Riverdale, Gloucester, Albany, La Porte, Chicago, Los Angeles, and a middle‑school reunion in Syracuse. They also mention family matters such as the ill health of Aunt Addie, the care of a child named Kingsley, and requests for friends to look after him.
  • Postal cards (5) – One‑cent cards addressed to Austen, each bearing a brief travel update or a friendly note.
  • Transcriptions – Typed versions of the handwritten letters, available in plain‑text files.

Key themes include long‑distance travel across the United States, social invitations, family health concerns, and the everyday concerns of a woman balancing personal life with the demands of a traveling lifestyle.

Scope

The collection covers the calendar year 1896 and documents correspondence between Albany, New York, and Staten Island, New York, with references to travel to Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; La Porte, Indiana; and Syracuse, New York. It is limited to letters and postal cards sent by Julia Tabor Martin to Alice Austen and does not include responses or other correspondence. The materials provide a snapshot of late‑19th‑century social networks, travel logistics, and domestic concerns within a specific geographic and temporal context.
