Description

1896 Staten Island Wedding Invitations Collection

Overview

This collection consists of three digitized wedding invitations printed in 1896. The invitations were issued by the parents of the brides—William Clawson, William Hathorne Kirtland, and Francis H. Bagley—and invite guests to the marriages of their daughters at churches on Staten Island and an address in New York City. The scanned images are in English and are housed in the Alice Austen House Museum’s archival holdings.

Background

The invitations reflect Victorian‑era customs of announcing marriages through printed cards. They were collected by the Alice Austen House as part of its documentation of Staten Island’s social history in the late nineteenth century. The creators—Clawson, Kirtland, and Bagley—were members of the island’s upper‑middle‑class community, and their invitations provide insight into the social networks and religious practices of the period.

Contents

The collection contains three scanned images:
  • Clawson–Bones – “Mr. and Mrs. William Clawson request your presence at the marriage of their daughter Marie Louise to Mr. Louis S. Bones, on Monday, April 6, 1896 at five o’clock, in Saint John’s Church, Clifton, Staten Island.”
  • Kirtland–Batchelder – “Mr. and Mrs. William Hathorne Kirtland announce the marriage of their daughter Mary Augusta Genet to Mr. William Van Zandt Batchelder, on Tuesday, May 12, 1896, 503 Boulevard, New York.”
  • Bagley–Craik – “Mrs. Francis H. Bagley invites you to be present at the marriage of her daughter Harriette Woodbridge to Mr. John Craik Jr., on Tuesday, May 26, 1896 at five o’clock, Randall Memorial Church, Sailor’s Snug Harbor, Staten Island.”
  • Each invitation lists the parents, bride, groom, date, time, and venue, and is accompanied by a high‑resolution JPEG scan.

    Scope

The collection covers the year 1896 and focuses on wedding invitations issued by families in Staten Island and one in New York City. It illustrates the social customs of marriage announcements, the use of printed invitations among upper‑middle‑class families, and the religious venues of the time. The collection is limited to the three invitations and does not include related programs, photographs, or other wedding‑related documents.
