Description

Malvina Martin Correspondence to Alice Austen (1898)

Overview

This collection comprises a set of personal letters written by Malvina Martin to Elizabeth Alice Austen on March 14, 1898. The materials are digitized as high‑resolution JPEG scans of the original handwritten envelopes and pages, accompanied by typed transcriptions. The correspondence is in English and reflects the social and health concerns of the period.

Background

Malvina Martin resided in Rosebank, Staten Island, and was a close friend of Austen’s. The letters were sent from 63 East Fifty‑sixth Street, New York, and were part of Austen’s broader archive of personal and professional communications preserved by the Alice Austen House Museum. The collection illustrates the informal network of friends and family that surrounded Austen during the late Victorian era.

Contents

  • Two scanned images of the letter: one showing the envelope header (“Miss Alice Antine, Rosebank, P.O., Statue Island, New York”) and the other depicting the full handwritten message.
  • Transcription files (TXT) that provide typed versions of the handwritten text.
  • Metadata indicating the date, sender, recipient, and subjects such as health updates, telegram notifications, and social invitations.
  • The letter itself contains a telegram update from a “Howard” regarding an appendicitis operation, a favorable medical outlook, and an invitation to dinner on Sunday. It also references a person named Julia, hinting at ongoing social ties.

Scope

The collection covers a single date (March 14, 1898) and focuses on personal correspondence that blends family health updates with social invitations. It reflects the everyday concerns of a well‑connected Staten Island household and offers insight into the social rituals of the time, such as dinner gatherings and the use of telegraph communication. The materials are limited to the two letters and their transcriptions; no additional documents or photographs are included.

63 East Fifty-sixth Street. Dear Miss Austen, Last night I received a telegram from Howard saying that the operation for appendicitis had been performed, and that the doctors reported a favourable outlook. I will let you know as soon as I hear further. I am always in wish for in the morning, and should be very glad to see you some morning to tell you about Julia. I am very well and thank you most heartily for your kind invitation to take dinner with you some Sunday. Faithfully yours, Malvina Martin. March 14th 78
