Overview

This collection contains three high‑resolution JPEG scans of handwritten letters dated 25 May 1895, written by C.L. Sturtevant in Heidelberg, Germany, to Elizabeth Alice Austen at Rose Bank, Staten Island, New York. Accompanying each image is a typed transcription in English. The letters are part of the Austen Family Papers (MS1) housed at the Alice Austen House Museum.

Elizabeth Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a pioneering American photographer whose personal papers illuminate late‑Victorian social life on Staten Island. C.L. Sturtevant, a contemporary photographer and correspondent, maintained regular contact with Austen, discussing photographic projects and travel plans.
