Description

Alice Austen–Daisy Elliot Correspondence, July 29 1895

Overview

This collection contains three handwritten letters dated July 29, 1895, exchanged between Elizabeth Alice Austen, a pioneering Staten Island photographer, and her acquaintances. The letters are preserved as high‑resolution JPEG scans and form part of the Alice Austen House Museum’s archival holdings.

Background

Alice Austen (1866‑1952) was a prominent photographer whose work documented late‑Victorian life on Staten Island. The correspondence reflects her social network, including close friends and family. Daisy Elliot, the primary correspondent, was a friend residing in Rosebank, Staten Island. The letters were collected by the museum to illustrate Austen’s personal relationships and travel connections, notably her ties to London, England.

Contents

The collection includes three scanned letters:
  • Letter 1 – From Daisy Elliot to Alice Austen, addressing personal matters and travel plans.
  • Letter 2 – From Harry M.E. (likely a business associate) to Alice, mentioning Brown Tinsley & Co. in London and the Staten Island Bicycle Club.
  • Letter 3 – From George Hope to Alice, referencing family members (Jack, Isaac, Maggie, Peter) and expressing affection.
  • Each letter is accompanied by OCR text, revealing themes of friendship, travel, family, and everyday concerns. The images capture the original handwriting, stamps, and postmarks, providing insight into 19th‑century postal practices.

    Scope

The collection covers a single date, July 29, 1895, and includes correspondence originating from Staten Island and London. It focuses on personal and social topics rather than professional photography. The collection is limited to the three letters and does not include related photographs, business records, or other correspondence from the broader Austen Papers.
