Description

The Odyssey (Books XXI–XXIV) and Early‑20th‑Century Medical Case Notes Collection

Overview

This digital collection brings together two distinct corpora: (1) English‑language transcriptions of the final four books of Homer’s Odyssey (Books XXI–XXIV), each paired with a machine‑readable JSON file that maps every named entity in the passage to a unique identifier; and (2) a German‑language homeopathic medical manuscript dated c. 1900 containing six case studies (numbers 75–80) with OCR‑derived text and a corresponding entity‑extraction JSON file. The entire set is described by a master PINAX metadata record and a reorganization summary that groups the files by thematic content.

Background

The Odyssey is a cornerstone of ancient Greek epic poetry, traditionally attributed to Homer and composed in the 8th century BCE. The four books included here cover the “trial of the axes,” the slaughter of the suitors, Penelope’s recognition of Ulysses, and the final peace with the suitors’ ghosts. Modern English translations place the text in the public domain, and an automated pipeline generated the entity‑mapping files to support digital‑humanities analysis.

The medical component reflects late‑19th‑ to early‑20th‑century German homeopathic practice. The scanned page (scan_revenge1.jpg) records case numbers 75–80, detailing symptoms, prescribed remedies (e.g., Lachesis, Sulphur, Aurum), and brief outcomes. The manuscript’s provenance is unknown, but its terminology aligns with contemporary homeopathic literature.

Contents

  • Odyssey Book XXI–XXIV (four sub‑collections): each includes a plain‑text file (`book21.txt` … `book24.txt`), a `relationships.json` file listing opaque identifiers and their canonical names, and a `pinax.json` bibliographic record.
  • Medical Case Notes: a scanned image (JPEG), OCR‑generated English text of the six cases, an entity‑extraction JSON file (71 identifiers), and a PINAX record describing the manuscript.
  • Reorganization‑description.txt: explains the thematic grouping of the files.
  • Master relationships.json: aggregates the entity codes for all sub‑collections.
  • Master pinax.json: provides overall collection metadata (title, creator = Homer, subjects, access URL).

Scope

The Odyssey portion covers the narrative arc from the “trial of the axes” through the final reconciliation in Ithaca, enumerating all principal characters, divine agents, locations, and objects mentioned in Books XXI–XXIV. The medical portion documents homeopathic treatment of dental, gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and hemorrhoidal conditions as recorded in a single 1900 manuscript page. No additional books of the epic or further medical pages are included; the collection is limited to the materials listed above, offering a compact yet richly annotated resource for literary scholars, classicists, and historians of medicine.

# Reorganization Summary

The files were grouped based on their content themes. The primary grouping was by book numbers for The Odyssey texts, as each book contains distinct narrative segments. The medical case notes were placed in a separate group due to their entirely different subject matter. No files remained ungrouped as all content fit logically into the defined categories.

## Groups Created

- **Odyssey_Book_21**: Files containing content from Book XXI of The Odyssey, focusing on the trial of the axes and Ulysses revealing himself.
- **Odyssey_Book_22**: Files containing content from Book XXII of The Odyssey, detailing the killing of the suitors and punishment of the maids.
- **Odyssey_Book_23**: Files containing content from Book XXIII of The Odyssey, where Penelope recognizes Ulysses and they leave the town.
- **Odyssey_Book_24**: Files containing content from Book XXIV of The Odyssey, covering the ghosts of the suitors and the peace concluded by Minerva.
- **Medical_Case_Notes**: Files containing medical case notes and treatments, likely related to homeopathic remedies.
